What we do
Out And Back is a reader-supported publication all about good storytelling, authenticity, and sustainable performance development.
That means those of us behind this publication are realistic in what we write about when it comes to our approaches in our respective sports. Undertaking activity and sport is a lifestyle, and whether you are a seasoned adventurer looking for progression, a newbie trying to understand the sporting world, or someone who enjoys keeping fit and active, there's something to take from every edition.
Out And Back was founded by journalist Niamh Lewis as a gap in the market to bring sportswriting and storytelling together with mindset and development information from our trusted, qualified coach columnists.
Our mission is to deliver information that is of value to our audience, give you food for thought, inspiration, and things to take away in your daily lives and adventures to get the best out of it.
We hope you like it.
We are based in Cumbria, UK, so expect lots of Lake District and countryside-focused content, but most of our adventure stories stretch far and wide.
Who we are

Niamh Lewis (founder)
I am a proud Lancastrian and I’ve spent the past decade working in professional sport as a journalist and senior editor. I’m also a mountain leader and running coach. My background is in triathlon, and now I split my time between running, swimming and wondering where all the hours in a day go.
Stuart Rimmer MBE is a mountain lover, educationalist, performance coach, author, strategy consultant and now 'very former' endurance athlete; living and working between London and Cumbria. He is the founder of innermountaincoach.com
Richard Kendall is a father of two, a keen and highly accomplished ultra-distance mountain runner and coach. He is based in the Peak District. In his spare time he is a civil servant.

Emma Goodwin-Jones is a qualified personal trainer, pilates teacher and cancer & exercise specialist based in Yorkshire and Cumbria. She specialises in helping people add value to life as it is now, keeping enjoyment and longevity as core. An advocate for being outside, she spends her free time in the mountains or by the sea running, swimming and cycling.

How we do things
Out And Back is about quality, not quantity.
Subscribing is free. After that the choice is yours to support the work we do by upgrading to a paid subscription for the cost of a pint of ale, or a couple of coffees a month (£6).
Technically, we are a not-for-profit as every penny goes towards paying for the resources and people (editors) to make this and future editions possible.
You are paying for access to several highly educated and qualified people who have decades’ worth of skills, knowledge, experience, and information packaged up with journalistic storytelling in a nice colourful newsletter that lands seamlessly in your inbox every week.
If you’re interested in free subscriptions, there is a referral scheme to get involved with.
For organisations, brands, clubs or multiple people seeking a joint subscription with one price, hit the link above or get in touch and we can arrange it.
